Terms of Service: Use of Private Weather Stations on DAS

For the purposes of this agreement, the "station owner" is the individual or organization responsible for purchasing, installing, and maintaining a private weather station. "AgWeatherNet", or "(AWN)", is a Washington State University program maintaining hardware and software that serves Pacific Northwest agricultural weather data. The "Decision Aid System", or "(DAS)", is a web-based platform that transfers time-sensitive information to agricultural decision makers, run by the Washington State University "Decision Aid System research group", or "(DAS group)". The "DAS user" is the individual or organization responsible for registering as a user of the DAS.

An AWN "Tier 3" station is a privately owned, installed, and maintained weather station that has been incorporated into AWN at the request of the station owner and that is subject to specific terms and conditions established by AWN. If a Tier 3 station owner designates station access as public ("Tier 3a"), the weather station will be available for all DAS users. If a Tier 3 station owner designates station access as restricted ("Tier 3b"), only users possessing an AWN-generated, station-specific, access key (aka "key code") can access the station data on the DAS platforms via AWN network API. To access Tier 3b stations on DAS, the user must provide the station’s AWN access key on their DAS account to allow the system to access the station’s data via AWN API.

To access Tier 3 weather stations on DAS (either Tier 3a or Tier 3b), the user accepts the following terms:

  • DAS group has permission to use all Tier 3 data for research, spatial modeling, quality assurance processes, and related operations. AWN and DAS group also have permission to share Tier 3 data with third parties for the above-mentioned purposes.
  • Any third party granted access to data as permitted above shall be subject to the terms and conditions of this agreement. Acceptance of these terms must be provided in writing before data will be released.
  • DAS group takes reasonable precautions to prevent data loss or public data breaches, but Washington State University and DAS group neither guarantee data security, nor assumes legal liability for potential data losses or public data breaches.
  • Tier 3 Stations presenting poor data quality can be disconnected at any time from model calculation and visibility on DAS to avoid misleading and incorrect information to the grower; in such a case the DAS group will not provide a refund of the DAS subscription fee of the current year (if this applies to the user) but will offer to the user the possibility to connect to a single replacement alternative station at no cost.
  • DAS group assumes no responsibility for ensuring the quality of weather data provided by Tier 3 stations.
  • If a Tier 3 station is disconnected from the AWN network for any reason, the DAS group will not provide a refund of the DAS subscription fee of the current year (if this applies to the user); in any such case DAS group will offer to the user the possibility to connect to a single replacement alternative station at no cost.

To access Tier 3b weather stations on DAS, the user accepts the following terms in addition to those above:

  • DAS expects and assumes the user registering an access key for a specific station on their account are also the owner of that station, or has received permission from the owner to use said key.
  • DAS group assumes no responsibility for misuse of Tier 3b personal access keys.
  • DAS group assumes no responsibility to protect and limit the dissemination of Tier 3b personal access keys.
